Acropolis
When it comes to Athens, the first square that comes to everyone's mind is the Acropolis with all its glory. The literal meaning of Acropolis is "high city." This acropolis is considered the birthplace of democracy. The most important structure you will see inside is the Parthenon Temple. It was built in the 5th century BC in an astonishing 10 years. What is even more astonishing is that its restoration has not been completed for 40 years. The name of the temple was Parthenos, meaning “virgin”, in reference to the goddess Athena. Christians used it as a church for a while and the Ottomans used it as a mosque. Since it was damaged a lot by fires and wars, most of its former state has not survived to the present day. The Herodes Atticus Theater was the largest social activity area on the Acropolis. Various cultural and artistic events are still held here. Another structure that serves the same function but is smaller is the Dionysus Theater. Pay special attention to the entrance gate of the Acropolis. Unfortunately, the original has not survived to the present day, but the famous Brandenburg Gate in Berlin was designed as an exact replica of it.
Anafiotika
You have to make a lot of effort to climb the Acropolis. However, the return route is more enjoyable and is full of stops where you can take a warm break when the weather is cold. When you start descending from the foothills of the hill, you will come across the views where you will feel the Greek breeze the most in the city. The name of this area is Anafiotika. Since Athens is usually the address for short visits, it is a region that many tourists skip, if you go, do not skip it, definitely see it. You will see many small, cute cafes. Choose, like and take a break in one. Anafiotika means little Anafi. It was named after the people who came from Anafi, one of the Cyclades Islands, because it was built according to the local architecture of that place.
Wolves' Hill
If climbing the Acropolis is not enough, you can go a little higher. There is another hill where you can even see this historical hill from a bird's eye view; Lykkavittos Hill. It means Wolves' Hill. If you do not know what it means to be tired, you can climb the hill using Plautarchou Street. But if your feet are at the point of rebellion, you also have the chance to go up with the funicular located on the same street.
